About engineering Colleges in india

Univariety comes up with a list of the Top Engineering Colleges of India. There are a total of 5672 engineering colleges of India out of which some 3000 odd institutes are in the three states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.

The list of Top Engineering Colleges in India is made up of the National Engineering Colleges like the Indian Institutes of Engineering (IITs), Indian Institutes of Information and Technology (IIITs), and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs). The State Engineering Colleges are the state-run Government Polytechnic Institutes and the affiliated Universities like Mumbai University, Jadavpur University (Kolkata), Anna University (Chennai), West Bengal University of Technology etc. Apart from these, there are numerous privately managed colleges which figure amongst the Top Engineering Colleges in India. The Birla Institute of Technology (BITS), Pilani heads the list closely followed by the Institute of Engineers (IE), Kolkata.

The IITs without a doubt figure at the top of the list with IIT, Kharagpur leading the way closely followed by the counterparts in Delhi, Kanpur and Delhi. There are 16 branches located all over India and they enjoy the status of autonomous universities and have the authority to draft their own curricula. Admission to the IITs is based on the IIT-JEE for undergraduate students and through GATE for post graduate students.

The IIITs are a group of institutes formed by the central Government to concentrate on imparting education on the areas of Information and Technology. Admission to these institutes is based on the scores obtained the Joint Entrance Examination.

The NITs are a group of public engineering colleges which were set up by the Government of India. There are a total of 30 institutes each located in a major state of India. The NITs offer degree courses at the under graduate, post graduate and the doctorate levels in various departments of engineering and technology. Admissions to these were granted by the erstwhile All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) but has now given way to the JEE MAINs across India.

The Government Polytechnics are state-run engineering colleges which offer a three year Polytechnic diploma after the tenth class itself. These are affiliated to the state board of technical education. After acquiring this diploma, a student is eligible to work as a junior engineer. At the same time, the student can continue his higher studies and qualify examinations of the AMIE to become an engineering graduate.
