West Virginia University

West Virginia University or WVU is a public research university, located in Morgantown, West Virginia. It was established in 1867. The WVU Extension Service provides outreach and offices in all 55 counties of West Virginia. The University contains around 15 degree granting colleges and schools. It offers around 96 UG level courses. WVU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Many WVU programs hold specialized accreditation.The WVU System spans the state, including 518 buildings on 15,880 acres. The Morgantown campus has 245 buildings (11 on the National Register of Historic Places) on 1,892 acres. WVU operates 10 experimental farms and four forests throughout the state, in addition to WVU Jackson's Mill State 4-H Camp.

Admission Criteria & Eligibility

English Language Proficiency Requirements (undergraduate levels only):

  1. Generally undergraduate applicants whose native language is not English must submit adequate (TOEFL) or (IELTS) results before an application can be considered for academic admission to WVU:
  2. TOEFL Internet-Based = 61
  3. TOEFL Paper-Based = 500
  4. IELTS = 6.0
  5. TOEFL results are not required for applicants who have received a high school diploma from a U.S. high school and have obtained the required minimum ACT or SAT test scores, or for those who have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited school in the United States.
  6. In some cases, SAT Reading Test or ACT English scores may be used to meet English Proficiency.
  7. A passing grade in the subject of English on the IGCSE or GCSE Certificates from Cambridge International will also be accepted for English Proficiency.
  8. Applicants who have completed English composition courses at a U.S. institution, which WVU determines are equivalent to the WVU’s English 101 and 102 with a “B” average, are not required to submit TOEFL/IELTS scores. Many online English composition courses are not considered equivalent and will require review and approval from the English department.
  9. In some cases, it may be possible to consider applicants who lack adequate TOEFL or IELTS scores. Such applicants must enroll in the WVU Intensive English Program prior to beginning their academic program. Applicants who wish to be considered for this option must notify the Office of Admissions when they submit their application. Additional information about the Intensive English Program can be obtained by emailing iep@mail.wvu.edu.
