Visva Bharati University

Rabindranath conceived the idea of Visva-Bharati as a centre forcoordinated study of the different cultures. According to him thiscentre would not only be a centre of the intellectual life of Indiabut also the centre of the economic life, contributing to all majorspheres of Indian.  Visva-Bharati University is located about 160km by road fromKolkata in the twin towns of Santiniketan and Sriniketan, in thedistrict of Birbhum, West Bengal. The nearest railway station isBolpur (Santiniketan) on the Eastern Railway and the air terminalis Kolkata Airport. The Institute’s buildings and departmentsare scattered among the two towns. Santiniketan is situated at anelevation of 200 feet above the sea level, the ground slopesgradually to 100 feet above sea level near the Ajay river about 3miles to the south and the Kopai stream about 2 miles to the north.This gives the location a scenic view with peaceful vast stretchesof land all around.Visva-Bharati University was established in May 1951 as a CentralUniversity and an institute of national importance by an act ofParliament. Visva-Bharati University has the President of India asthe Paridarsaka (Visitor) and the Governor of West Bengal as thePradhana (Rector).  The President of India appoints theAcharya (Chancellor) and the Upacharya (Vice-chancellor) of theUniversity.
