Admission Criteria & Eligibility

Admission to a Virginia Commonwealth University undergraduate degree program requires graduation from a secondary school or the equivalent (lyceum, senior middle school, university preparatory school, completion of GCSE exams, Standard 12 graduation, etc.), which typically consists of at least 12 years beyond kindergarten.Your secondary education should be the type that would prepare you for entrance to a recognized university in your home country.
Proof of English proficiency
  1. Since lectures, laboratory instructions and written and oral examinations at VCU are conducted in English, you must be proficient in the language.
  2. All applicants whose native language is not English must sit for the Test of English as a Foreign Language, the International English Language Testing System test or the Pearson Test of English and arrange for the testing agency to send the results to VCU (code 5570).
  3. The required TOEFL score for undergraduate applicants is 70 iBT with the exception of the College of Engineering where the TOEFL score would remain at 80 on iBT, 550 PBT or IELTS of 6.0 (academic band score) and 6.5 for Engineering. The required PTE score is 53. 
  4. Students who have not taken a TOEFL, ELTS or PTE or have not achieved the required score may take the VCU English Language Placement exam on arrival.
  5. Please note that students who do not achieve the required level of proficiency will be required to take English courses prior to enrollment in the academic program at an additional expense.
