University of Utah

The University of Utah, also known as the U or the U of U, is a public, coeducational research university in Salt Lake City, Utah. The university was established in 1850 making it Utah's oldest institution of higher education. It is one of ten institutions that make up the Utah System of Higher Education. The university offers more than 100 undergraduate majors and more than 90 graduate degree programs. Graduate studies include the S.J. Quinney College of Law and the School of Medicine, Utah's only medical school. The University of Utah has the only accredited architecture program in Utah, as well as the only medical school. Admission Criteria & Eligibility

English Proficiency
English language proficiency is critical to your success at the University of Utah. English proficiency may be demonstrated by freshman applicants in one of the following ways:
Approved English Proficiency Exams
  • ACT English score of 18 or higher
  • SAT Reading score of 27 or higher
  • iBT/TOEFL:80 or above
  • IELTS: 6.5 or above
*Test date must be within two years of application for scores to be valid
The following applicants do not need to submit proof of English proficiency, however all freshman applicants must submit an official test score to complete their application.  If a student is not required to demonstrate English proficiency, they must submit an ACT or SAT score.
Other Ways to Demonstrate English Proficiency
  1. Students who attended at least 2.5 years and graduated, or will graduate, from a U.S. or U.S. Regionally Accredited High School, and received grades of A or B in non-ESL level English classes.
  2. Native speakers of English who are citizens of Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland)
How to Send your Test Scores Officially
Please have your scores sent electronically to the University of Utah Office of Admissions. You can do this by using the following Codes:
  1. SAT Code: 4853
  2. ACT Code: 4274
  3. TOEFL Code: 4853
  4. IELTS: Please contact your testing center and have them send your results directly to the University of Utah Office of Admissions
  5. All other approved scores will need to be sent to 4853
  6. *If the name on your test result is different from the name you put on your application, please contact iao@sa.utah.edu with the name information so we can match the score with your application
