Stella Maris College

Beginning in a small one-storey building in Santhome, Mylapore with 32 students, the College moved to its present campus "The Cloisters" on Cathedral Road in 1960. Today the College has an enrollment of 4,872 students from diverse backgrounds, communities and nations.A student-centric, participatory teaching-learning-evaluation system assures the students of optimal educational benefits. The College is at the forefront of higher education in India by balancing its commitment to academic excellence with emphasis on all-round development of students. Offering courses in traditional Arts and Science courses and in emerging areas such as International Studies, Information Technology, Bioinformatics and Biotechnology, the curriculum promotes national development, fosters global competencies and facilitates skills training to meet the challenges of a competitive workplace. The College is a Catholic minority institution established and run by the Society of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM), a religious congregation founded by Blessed Mary of the Passion (Helene de Chappotin) in Ootacamund, Tamil Nadu in 1877. The initiatives of the College arise from a sound philosophy of life based on faith in God and the contemporary reality of a pluralistic Indian society that is challenged by global ideologies and cultures.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
   All students must put in a minimum of 85% attendance in every course to qualify to write the End Semester Examinations, in addition to completing all other academic requirements such as Continuous Assessment Test, seminars, assignments etc.

♦    Students whose attendance falls between 75% and 85% due to participation in co-curricular and extra-curicular activities may be permitted to take the examinations on the recomendation of the respective faculty-in-charge / Head of the Department.

♦    Students whose attendance falls between 75% and 85% due to participation in NCC / NSS / Sports may be permitted to take the examinations on the recommendation of the faculty-in-charge.

♦    Students whose attendance falls between 75% and 85% due to long-term illness / hospitalisation of ten days and above may be permitted to take the examinations provided she produces a medical certificate and her illness has been notified to the Head within three days by the parent / guardian. She is permitted to take the examinations after payment of the condonation fee.

♦    Students whose attendance falls below 50% in any course in the semester will have to re-register and repeat the course requirements after their final semester. 
Facilities
BANKING SERVICES:
The Indian Overseas Bank has a branch within the campus and offers banking and other related facilities to the College and the students like an ATM machine, online payment and collection of fees (tuition/exam).
DTP CENTRE:
The DTP Centre provides stationery as well as services such as photocopying, lamination and binding for both faculty and students.
CANTEEN:
The College has a canteen, a health food centre, a juice shop and a Maggi kiosk.
THE HOSTEL:
There are four hostels for resident students. The residents are one large, happy family, and engage in friendly rivalry in games and sports.
