Stanley Medical College

  Stanley Medical College and Hospitals is one of the oldest and well known centers in India in the field of medical education. The seed for this institution was sown as early as 1740 when the East India Company first created the medical department. The renowned Stanley Hospital now stands on the old site of the Monegar choultry established in 1780.The College is associated with the well known Government Stanley Hospital which has 1280 beds for in-patient treatment. The hospital has an out-patient attendance of around 5000 patients per day. A unique feature is its 8-story surgical complex equipped to perform up to 40 surgeries simultaneously, and a separate pediatrics block with all specialties under one roof. RSRM hospital is also attached for obstetrics and Gynecology care. And a modern 7 story medicine complex under construction expected to be completed in 2013.

Ranking
SMC has been ranked as the 25th best college for Medical studies in India, by India Today’s poll on best medical colleges in India.  The college has witnessed a slump from 2011’s ranking of 24th and has slipped down to 25th for 2012.  However, the college has regularly been a part of the top 25 in India since 2007.  Getting into the college is not easy as one has to compete with the best minds of India, in the entrance examinations.
Infrastructure
The college offers separate accommodation facilities (hostels) for male and female students. The men's hostel features a separate kitchen and dining facilities for undergraduates, house surgeons and postgraduates respectively. Sport facilities are also, well looked after.  The campus also has a basketball court. It contains many trees and nicely maintained gardens. Three new hostels are slated to come up, behind the paediatric block, which will accommodate around 1200 students.
Activities
The college has a multitude of activities which the students can pursue.  The dance group “STAN BOOTS” has won several awards at various inter-college cultural fests.  It was started in 2002.  ‘Euphoria’ is the annual inter-college cultural festival, which is famous not only in the city, but also in other states.  The college sports teams have excelled in various competitions, with hockey, football cricket, basketball and volleyball teams, always featuring in inter-college competitions. The hockey team won an All India event in the form of JIPMER'S "SPANDAN" in 2009. The college also has a literature club The Stanley Literary Society which promotes literature and arts among the students. College students (Stanleans) have also started a project called GREEN HANDS, which involves the growth and distribution of saplings to nearby villages.
Placement
There is no placement cell at SMC.  However, the M.B.B.S. course includes a one year rotational internship and SMC offers this rotating internship at the Stanley Government Hospital.
Facilities

The men's hostel has separate kitchen and dining facilities for undergraduates, house surgeons and postgraduates respectively. The sport facilities are well maintained. The campus has a basketball court. The campus itself is a pleasant one with lots of trees and well-maintained gardens. Three new hostels was recently inaugurated in 2012-2013 behind the paediatrics block having accommodation for around 1500 students.
