Presidency University, Kolkata

Presidency University formerly Presidency College or Hindu College was founded in 1817 by Raja Ram Mohan Roy.  It is one of the oldest educational institutions of Western Asia.  It was initially named as the Mahapathshala wing of Hindu College, it was renamed Presidency College in 1855.  It became an autonomous university very recently in 2010.  The university has more than 4000 students and runs around 18 undergraduate courses.

Ranking
The college has been ranked as 5th best for Science and 7th best for Humanities by India Today’s poll for best Science and Humanities colleges in India in 2012.  Both the departments of Science and Humanities have consistently featured in the top half of the top 10 colleges in India for their respective fields.  Although, both departments have slipped places from 2011, with the Science department dropping from 3rd to 5th and the Humanities College dropped from 6th to 7th place.  The university is not easy to get into and conducts its own entrance test, only after the candidate satisfies the eligibility criteria.
Facilities
Apart from the awards and recognition parties organised by the university, there are many other facilities including hostels for boys and girls, sports grounds and the library. The Student’s Union also plays a big part in organising many sport and cultural events for the students for recreational and educational purposes.
Library:
The Presidency University Library has a very unique and rich collection of books, periodicals and manuscripts as well as multimedia resources built over nearly two hundred years. This includes some of the rarest reference materials along with thousands of important documents and journals.The University Library comprises two main units - i.e., - the Arts Library, the Science library alongside the individual departmental libraries. With the vast stock of old and rare books as well as the growing maintenance demands, plans for further infrastructural development and expansion are underway.
 
Building and grounds
The main building consists of the English, History, Geography, Bengali and Philosophy departments of the college.  The building also houses a clock tower, was built in the 19th century.  It is reminiscent of Victorian architecture common to the middle of that century. The buildings form a quadrangle in the middle.  The Science building was sanctioned in 1913. The new building housing the Economics, Political Science and Sociology departments was built in 1956, while the newest building built to the west of the main building was built in 1990 to conduct post graduate classes.
