National Institute of Technology, Raipur (NIT Raipur)

The National Institute of Technology, Raipur or NIT Raipur was founded in 1950.  It was initially named as the Govt. College of Mining and Metallurgy.  The institute is located right across the road from University of Chattisgarh.  Mining and Metallurgy were the only two sub streams available intially.  Much has changed since then. Today, there are around 12 undergraduate courses offered by the institute with more than 2500+ students.  The college focuses on engineering, architecture and science courses.

Selection process
Admission to the institute is based on the scores in the JEE-Main, which usually takes place in May.  The other criteria include 60% in 10+2, with PCM.  The college has reserved 50% seats for local students and 50% for other rankers.  Once selected, classes usually begin in the month of July.
Infrastructure
The institute is roughly 50 years old, but somehow it manages to look older. The buildings seem decrepit; the hostels aren't up to the mark either. The institute has not done anything about the increase in intake, and the hostels are choked for room and hopelessly overcrowded.  More than half of the students live in the nearby town of Kota. The laboratories and classrooms though sufficient, are far cry from anything special. The library is passable and operates in a 'first come, first serve' environment. There are a couple of grounds for cricket, volleyball, etc.
Faculty
This is one place where the institute takes a hit.  Most of the good professors seemed to have packed up and moved shop. The remaining ones aren’t too great either; and the gist is that very few are permanent faculty, while the ones who aren’t, seem to have better things to occupy themselves with, than solve student’s doubts. Students have described the current scenario as the 'worst possible condition'.
People
The people here are quite sociable. The male/female ratio is pretty poor in certain streams.  For instance in Mechanical (301 boys: 1 girl), and in some branches like Computers (61 boys: 1 girl).  Ragging is strictly not allowed.  Each and every student needs to submit a self declaration against ragging.
Hangout
There are some tiny malls in the vicinity.  However, most of the students prefer to while away time with Mother Nature.  There are some lovely ‘jharnas’ (waterfalls) a few kilometres out, and Donegarh Ghat is a frequent student hangout.  Students also like visiting the Bhilai Steel plant (although they never mentioned why, and the college authorities hardly ever asked them.  Hence, we are as clueless as anyone here) and a couple of other industries near the college campus.
Placement
The Department of Training and Placement or the placement cell as we like to call it has been doing an extremely good job over the years.  The placement cell plays an important part in scheduling and setting up campus recruitment drives from major companies.  Being an NIT, most of the top companies recruit from the institute.
