National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT Calicut)

National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NITC), formerly Calicut Regional Engineering College (CREC), is located in Chathamangalam, 22 Kms north east of Kozhikode. It offers around 10 undergraduate courses and the strength of the student body is over 4000. Established in 1961, NIT Calicut is a technical Institution of national importance set up by an Act of parliament (Act 29 of 2007). Admission into the college is on the basis of JEE, conducted by CBSE. The test is conducted in April and results are declared by May. Classes generally begin in July.

Ranking Explanation
The college was ranked 13th among the best engineering colleges in India by India Today magazine in the year 2012. It has moved up ten spots from its previous year’s ranking of 23rd.
Selection process
Admission into the institute is based on the rank scored in JEE-Main, which usually takes place in May.  The other criteria include 60% in 10+2, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as subjects.  The college reserves 50% seats for local students and 50% for others.  Once selected, classes usually begin in the month of July.
Campus
The college is located around 22 km north-east of Calicut City in Kerala. It has a state-of-the-art library that is inclusive of the “NALANDA” (Network of Automated Library and Archives) digital library along with a conventional library having more than 100,000 books, bound volumes and over 200 journals. The computer centre has all the relevant software packages along with the latest computers and internet facilities. The college has thirteen hostels. Every hostel has a mess and a mini canteen. STD/ISD facilities are also available in the hostels.
