Indian Maritime University - Kolkata Campus

The Institute was established at the onset of Independence in 1947 to satisfy the growing need of marine engineers in India. The Institution earlier named as Directorate of Marine Engineering Training had its headquarter in Calcutta and a branch at Mumbai, under Ministry of Shipping (Government of India). The Institute has been renamed Marine Engineering and Research Institute in 1994.
The Institute was a dream project of a new India as she was expanding her horizon in the maritime field, starting with an initial intake of 60 cadets, today about 300 young highly motivated Engineers are passing through her hallowed portals.

Facilities
Facilities at MERI provide excellent opportunity for those who are inclined to improve their skills in sporting events and games. MERI has regularly participated in inter-collegiate sports meets & have successfully positioned herself as one of the best.
The facilities at the Campus include:
A competition standard Swimming Pool
Tennis Court.
Field Games - Cricket, Football, Hockey, Basketball, Volleyball etc.
Gymnasium for Physical Development
Indoor Games - Table Tennis, Carom, Darts, Chess etc.
Kick Boxing,The Hostel has a multi-level formation. On the first level - the wings are divided into 10 Sadans (Houses). Appropriately, these "Sadans" are named after famous scientists - Bose, Diesel, Edison, Faraday, Froude, Marconi, Newton, Parson, Raman, Rankin .
And on Second level, the hostels are further divided into:
Junior Hostel.
This section of the Hostel is separated from the rest of the Accommodation and includes an office with attached bed room for the Hostel warden/s. The resident Warden ensures the safety & comfort of the First year cadets. Rooms are large, airy & accommodates 4~6 cadets. Each Sadan has it's own common Bathrooms & Kit Rooms fitted lockers.
East & West Wings for 2nd & 3rd year Students,The Girls' Hostel is a new and welcome addition to the existing infrastructure of the college. It was Sonali Banerjee - the first woman marine engineer of Asia - who first occupied this hostel in 1995. The hostel is adjacent to the officer's quarters and is equipped with various amenities .
All wings have their own Study Rooms, Messes, T.V. Rooms, Drinking Water facility & the basic Furnishing.
