Jamia Millia Islamia

Jamia Millia Islamia, an institution originally established at Aligarh in United Provinces, India in 1920 became a Central University by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1988. In Urdu language, Jamia means ‘University’, and Millia means ‘National’.
The story of its growth from a small institution in the pre-independence India to a central university located in New Delhi—offering integrated education from nursery to research in specialized areas—is a saga of dedication, conviction and vision of a people who worked against all odds and saw it growing step by step. They “built up the Jamia Millia stone by stone and sacrifice by sacrifice,” said Sarojini Naidu, the nightingale of India.

Jamia Millia Islamia retains 12th rank in Universities category in MHRD s NIRF 2018 Law and Architecture faculties among top 10.Zaroorat Nahi a Sand Animation Music Video nominated at FICCI BAF Awards 2018.The university was ranked 4th among Arts colleges and 21st among Engineering colleges in India by the India Today magazine for the year 2012. It was also ranked 15th among law colleges in India. Parameter wise, it was ranked 22nd in terms of placements, academic input and infrastructure. The university has consistently maintained its status among the best universities in India.
Campus
The campus has several buildings for various departments. The classrooms are not air-conditioned but spacious and well-ventilated. The campus buildings are W-Fi enabled. The university has four hostels for boys and one for girls. It also has a hostel for working women. The availability of the hostels is however limited because of shortage of rooms.
Sports
Jamia Millia Islamia organises sports activities through the University Sports Committee that is chaired by a university professor. Facilities have been provided for popular games such as football, basketball, badminton, table tennis, handball, boxing, shooting, athletics, cricket, and hockey. There is a club headed by a university professor for each sport. Sportspersons from the university have represented the nation in many international tournaments.
University Library
The university has a fully computerised library named Dr. Zakir Husain Library after the ex-President of India, (Late) Dr. Zakir Husain. It is the central library of the university and is linked to the Jamia Library System that includes the departmental libraries. Dr. Zakir Husain Library has over 3.57 lakh learning resources that include books, manuscripts, periodicals, pamphlets, and electronic resources. Students are given open access to the library’s resources, except for the rare books section, text books, archived material and manuscripts. The university also has a digital library that provides access to around 15 major databases of online journals.
Placements
Jamia Millia Islamia has a Placement Cell that arranges pre-placement talks and campus placements. It manages audio-visual and other such facilities required during pre-placement talks, interviews, written tests and group discussions. The campus is visited by more than 100 companies every year. Students of the university have secured placements in reputed companies including Cisco, IBM, Nokia, and Accenture. Average pay packages offered to students range from 4-5 lakh per annum.
