Jamia Hamdard University

Jamia Hamdard University is situated in New Delhi, besides Batra Hospital off Mehrauli-Badarpur Road. It offers around 15 undergraduate courses. Funded by Wakf, with the aim of imparting education in light of Islamic teachings of public charity, Hakeem Abdul Hameed established various educational institutions. These include the Institute of History of Medicine and Medical Research, Indian Institute of Islamic Studies, Hamdard Tibbi Medical College, and Hamdard College of Pharmacy. All these institutions were amalgamated to form Jamia Hamdard. It was inaugurated by Late Shri Rajiv Gandhi and was given the status of Deemed to be University by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 1989.

Admission into the university is on the basis of marks obtained in the entrance test conducted by the university. Those applying to engineering courses should have qualified the JEE (Main) examination. Vacant seats are filled through interviews and a competitive test conducted by the university. The test is conducted in May and the results are out by June. Classes begin in July.

Campus

Infrastructure and Facilities
The university has a large campus spread over more than 200 acres of land. It houses individual academic blocks for all departments including Medicine, Pharmacy, and Information Technology. Each academic block has lecture rooms, laboratories and faculty libraries. A few areas on campus have Wi-Fi connectivity. Separate hostels are provided for foreigners and Indian nationals. The university also has a gymnasium in addition to playgrounds for badminton, cricket, basketball and volleyball.
Library and Computer Centre
Jamia Hamdard University has a central library in addition to six faculty libraries. The faculty libraries include the ones belonging to faculties of science, pharmacy, management studies, nursing, medicine, Islamic studies and information technology. The university also has a computer centre that works as a lab of the Department of Computer Science. It is equipped with system analysis units, computing facilities and all necessary software and peripherals.
Hostels
The university has around seven hostels. Admission into the university does not necessarily guarantee allotment of accommodation due to limited hostel availability. The annual charges of the hostels are to be paid in advance and it is compulsory for students to join the hostel mess and pay the charges for three months in advance. The students can stay in the hostel during the academic session only. During summer vacations, the students have to vacate the rooms for maintenance work. The university has arranged for a mechanical laundry for washing clothes.
Placement Activities
Placement activities are organised by the university’s Training and Placement office. The university is visited annually by a large number of reputed companies including Ranbaxy, Aricent, Allergan India, Novartis, Panacea, Biocon, Cipla, Pfizer, Dr. Reddy’s Labs, Maruti Udyog, HCL Technologies, Research Endeavors, Hewlett Packard, and Cisco. The placement office organises pre-placement talks, interviews, group discussion and campus recruitments. Final placements are conducted during the last term.
