Institute of Home Economics

The Institute of Home Economics started in the year 1961 by a Registered Co-operative Society conducting a two-year Diploma course in Home Science. DLF provided the society with a property in South Extension on a 99 year lease. The Diploma course was later followed by a one year course in Teacher Training in Home Science. As the college started growing, the Co-operative Society was taken over by a Trust, ‘Home Economics Education Society’ with Mrs. Rameshwari Nehru as the President and many other renowned educationists, as its members. Dr (Mrs) S. Malhan was the founder Director of the college. Her dynamism and keen involvement in the college affairs led to the recognition conferred by the University of Delhi and in 1969, Institute of Home Economics became a constituent college of University of Delhi.

Library Facilities
The Institute of Home Economics Library System consists of a Central Library and 11 departmental libraries which collectively support the teaching, research and extension programmes of the Institute. The college maintains a well-stocked library which is open to all students and staff. There is a well-equipped Reading Room, which subscribes to dailies, weeklies, periodicals and journals.
Laboratory Facilities
The Institute has several laboratories such as Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Therapeutic Nutrition, Human Development, Apparel Designing, Clothing Construction, Resource Management, Communication and Extension. The labs are spread on all the four floors of the college. Separate labs are allocated for post-graduate students. The laboratories are naturally lit, very well ventilated, spacious and well-equipped. All laboratories are provided with computer facilities and internet for the benefit of the staff and students. It is indeed an enriching and enjoyable experience to work in any of these laboratories
Computer Lab
The Institute has three computer labs equipped with 120 computers loaded with the latest software and internet connectivity for use by students, research scholars and faculty. Many classes of under-graduates and post-graduate students that require the use of computers are held in the computer lab. All computers are regularly upgraded to meet the requirements of changing technology. The computer labs are manned by technically qualified professionals. Internet facility is available to the faculty as well as students free of cost.
Canteen Facilities
A favourite hangout of the students during college hours is the college canteen where a wide variety of snacks and beverages are available at affordable prices. The canteen has been renovated this summer with an increased seating capacity for students to sit and eat or chat with their friends. A kiosk for coffee, iced tea, milkshakes and soups is the latest attraction.
Placement Comments

  • The Placement Cell at IHE has been active for last few years and has been playing an important role in securing placements for the students and providing various employment opportunities in different sectors to interested students. It tries to bridge the gap between academics and industry. The committee is involved in inviting various employers to the Institute and organizing meetings with the potential employers for the campus recruitment.
