Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad

The Indian School of Mines or ISM is located in the mineral-rich region of India in Dhanbad. Dhanbad is the prime coal belt in India. ISM offers around twenty undergraduate courses in Engineering and Science. It was formally inaugurated on 9th December 1926 by Lord Irwin, the Viceroy of India, to address the need for trained manpower related to mining activities in the country. In 1967, it was granted the status of a deemed to be university under Section 3 of University Grants Commission Act 1956. Admission into ISM is on the basis of JEE, a common entrance examination conducted throughout India.

Ranking Explanation
ISM Ranked as 13th Position in the Category of Engineering and Technology for The Year 2018 By NIRF. According to the rankings published by Outlook magazine, ISM was ranked 13th among all engineering colleges in India in 2017. It was ranked among the top ten colleges in terms of academic excellence and selection procedure. In the same survey, it was ranked 10th among the top ten government colleges in India. It did not feature in ranking surveys conducted by other magazines.
Facilities
ISM has a large and fully automated central library that has a collection of more than 80,000 books, 35,000 bound volumes of journals, 8,000 Ph.D thesis and dissertations, 1,200 digital books and more than 2,000 full text scholarly research journals. The university has its own health centre that is in close proximity to the hostels. For the promotion of extracurricular activities, the university has various societies such as Cultural Societies, Chayanika Sangh, Cyber Society, Music Society, and Photography Society.
Housing
Since all the programmes run by ISM are residential programmes, all students are required to stay in hostel accommodation provided by the university. There are separate hostels for boys and girls. The hostels are well managed and equipped with modern amenities. Most of the hostels are situated on the campus premises. Students can make use of the SBI ATM and sub-post office present on campus.
Placements
The university has a Training and Placement Cell that organises pre-placement talks, personal interviews, group discussions and campus placements. Pre-final year students are required to undergo summer internships in industries and organisations. Second year students may also undertake internships and projects of their own accord. Students of ISM have secured placements in several companies including Adani Mining Pvt Ltd., ACB (India) Ltd., Coal India Ltd., Ericsson India Global Services Pvt. Ltd., Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), and Indian Oil Corporation Limited.
Student Life
The campus life at ISM is buzzing with a diverse array of activities ranging from sports to music and science throughout the year. Some of the major activities held at ISM include:
     •    Cultural Cum Tech Fest – Srijan
     •    Cultural Festivals and Sports
     •    Pratibimb – Inter University Competition

The university provides facilities for popular sports including basketball, cricket, football, squash, tennis, badminton, volleyball, table tennis and athletics. Students who are interested in pursuing combat sports such as boxing and karate are also provided with necessary facilities.
