Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee

The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, also known as IITR or IIT Roorkee, is located in Haridwar district at the foothill of the Himalayas. It has two campuses, one in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, and the other in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. It is the oldest technical institution of India. Established in 1847, it was converted into an IIT in 2001. Admissions into IITR are highly competitive and are conducted through JEE, a joint entrance examination conducted throughout India. The institute continues to remain among the top ten engineering institutions in India since 2005.

Ranking Explanation
IITR ranked 6th In The Category Of Engineering For The Year 2018 By NIRF. Also Ranked As 2nd In The Category of Architecture For The Year 2018 By NIRF. IITR was ranked 6th in the India Today rankings for best engineering colleges in India, 2012. It has maintained its position among the top ten engineering colleges in India over a period of eight years. Parameter-wise, IITR is ranked fifth in terms of reputation, student care, infrastructure and placements based on the India Today-Nielson survey.
Campus Activities
The institute encourages extracurricular activities on campus through student clubs such as the Alaknanda club, hobbies club, U.G. club and P.G. club. The clubs cover diverse activities including philately, gardening, electronics, photography, star gazing and web designing. Students can also make use of sports facilities provided for swimming, football, volleyball, etc. IITR has been conducting an annual athletic meet since 1873. The institute also has other cultural and technical societies such as the ChESS, CEC, EDC, IEEE, etc.
Facilities
IITR has a well-managed campus offering all essential amenities to the students. It has several cafeterias including Alpahar and Nescafé. Students also have easy access to two banks and ATMs located on campus. The institute also has a post office, a railway reservation counter, and a 60-bed hospital with 24-hour emergency services, apart from places of worship for Hindu, Muslim, and Christian students.

Hospital:
Institute hospital IIT Roorkee is a 50 Beded hospital offering OPD , emergency and  IPD  , Laboratory   , x-ray & ECG services  to faculty , staffs and students . Ambulance services for referring patients  to higher centres works in optimal.
Hostels:
Fokki! That is how we define our dwelling places on the sprawling IIT campus. These bhawans are our legacy and they remind of us the glory this institute has had and of the renaissance it has witnessed.Our homes away from home are as modern as they can be. More importantly, though have spawned the cultures that make the campus an unforgettable experience. It's here that  midnight cricket tournaments, early morning bakar sessions, community computer warfare and so many other things find expression.
Clubs:
The competitive academic environment and co-curricular activities on campus keep the students on their toes. But everyone needs some time off, to relax and recharge . Clubs at IIT-R are the best place for this. The students' clubs: the Hobbies club, the U.G. club, the P.G. club, the Alaknanda club and the Jawahar club house the indoor sports facilities including seven Billiards & Snooker Tables, Carrom boards, Chess boards, Table Tennis facilities and a Foosball table. The hobbies club also has sections devoted to pursuits like star-gazing, philately and numismatics, and robotics. The clubs also have reading rooms with a plethora of newspapers and light magazines.
Guest Houses:
IT Roorkee strongly believes in the old Indian adage "Athithi Devo Bhava". We give our visitors the best facilities be it in terms of service, ambience or food. The campus has three guest houses to accommodate the guests and delegates who visit the campus.
Banks:
There are two banks on-campus: the Punjab National Bank (P.N.B.) and the State Bank of India(S.B.I.). Both the banks provide Centralised Banking Services, Internet Banking and A.T.M. facilities. On enrollment, every student of IIT-R must open an account with either bank.
Post Office:
The campus has a post office within its premises which is situated near the U.G. club. The post office is well equipped and caters to the needs of the students and the faculty, as well as the non-residents of the campus. The post office works on all weekdays from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M., and on Saturdays from 9 A.M. to 2 P.M.

Accommodation
The institute has ten boys’ hostels and three girls’ hostels in addition to six married hostels. Each hostel has a cyber café that is managed by the students. The hostels also have Wi-Fi connectivity. A mixed hostel system is followed wherein junior and senior students from all branches of study reside together. The hostels are equipped with all basic amenities required for comfortable living.
Placements
IITR has a Training and Placement Office that organises campus placements. It also provides training and career guidance to students. Pre-final year students of the institute can also apply for summer internships and training in industries. The institute has consistently maintained a good placement record. The salary packages offered till date to undergraduate students of IITM range from 3 lakhs to 20 lakhs per annum, with 6 lakhs being the average pay package.The Training and Placement Office allots a date to the company as per the ranking by the students. The company is ranked on the basis of following parameters:
