Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT Guwahati)

Indian Institute of Technology (Guwahati) also known as IITG is an autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institute of higher education. It was established in 1994 and is located in Guwahati, Assam. There are approximately 615 seats available for admission at the undergraduate level. The institute offers around 11 undergraduate courses in Art & Design, Engineering & Technology and Science.

Each year, admission to the undergraduate programmes is through the JEE entrance exam which is conducted in the month of April. The results for the same are declared in May. The students who clear the JEE main exam must then appear for the JEE advanced, which is conducted in the month of June. Results are declared in July and classes commence from August onwards.

Ranking
The institute has been ranked at the 7th position at an all India level. Getting into this college is not easy since students are required to first clear JEE mains and then the JEE advanced. Selection is strictly on merit basis. The level of competition is such that more than 6,00,000 students appear for about 10,000 engineering seats through this entrance exam.
Location and Campus
IIT Guwahati is located on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra and is roughly 20 kilometres from the main city. Accessibility is sometimes a concern, but as the hostels are within the campus, it’s not too much of a problem for the students.

IITG’s campus is spread over a massive 700 acres of land. The campus is excellently maintained and is always neat and clean. Almost all the classrooms are air conditioned, have projectors and comfortable benches. The library is well equipped with books of all types and can be easily accessed even at odd hours. Wi-Fi connectivity is available within the campus.
Hostel
As a rule, all the students studying at the institute reside in the college hostel. The hostels are located within the campus and the rooms are pretty good. There is a facility for single rooms but most of the students prefer sharing their rooms. Roughly, there are 10 hostels in the Guwahati campus with neat and clean rooms and washrooms. Internet, LAN and Wi-Fi facilities are also available in the hostels.
Faculty Commentary
In spite of being located in a small town and not being ranked higher among the remaining IITs, the faculty at Guwahati is quite spell bounding. Most of the professors have PhD degrees and have completed their doctorate from high ranking American universities. Guest faculties are also invited to the campus to conduct classes.

Students are extremely satisfied with the level of teaching. Some professors are strict while others are pretty lenient and gel really well with the students. Communication isn't a problem as most of the lectures are conducted in English.
 
Placement
The placement season at the campus starts in the month of December every year. On an average, 90% of the students get placed from this institute. Around a 100 companies approach the institute for placements every year. The average salary package offered to the students of this institute varies from 5.5 lacs/annum to 16.5 lacs/annum.
