Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi

The Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi, IIT (BHU), formerly known as the Institute of Technology, is a public engineering institution located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It was established in 1919 and is affiliated to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).

There are around 1,057 seats in this college. It offers around 22 undergraduate courses in engineering and technology, healthcare and sciences. Each year, admission to this course is through the JEE entrance exam which is conducted in the month of April. The results for the same are declared in May. The students who clear the JEE main exam must then appear for the JEE advanced which is conducted in the month of June. Results are declared in July and classes commence from August onwards.

Ranking
The college is ranked at the 6th position amongst all the engineering colleges in the country by India Today For the year 2016 and also ranked 4th Position For The Year 2015. Getting into this college is not easy since students are required to first clear JEE mains and then the JEE advanced. Selection is strictly on merit basis. The level of competition is such that more than 6,00,000 students appear for about 10,000 engineering seats through this entrance exam.
Location Information
IIT-BHU is located in the center of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. The university has a residential and co-educational campus within the larger BHU campus, which is spread over nearly 1,300 acres at the southern end of Varanasi on the banks of the River Ganges. In 1971, three faculties of BHU, viz., Banaras Engineering College (BENCO), College of Mining & Metallurgy (MINMET) and College of Technology (TECHNO) were merged to form the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU).
Facilities
The college has laboratories which are clean and well-maintained. The computer labs are air-conditioned. The library is spacious enough and doesn’t get too crowded even during exams. There’s a good supply of books as well. IIT-BHU is well known for sports. The infrastructure for extracurriculars is excellent. Students also get to use all the facilities of BHU without incurring any additional cost.
Attendance
The attendance norms are extremely strict at IIT-BHU. Students have to maintain at least 70% attendance overall, failing which they are barred from writing the papers. Subject-specific attendance is allowed to fall to around 50%, but the overall attendance has to be above 70%, or students are likely to lose a year.
Crowd and Hangouts
The men to women ratio is pretty low at 11:1. The overall crowd is quite nice. Students tend to gel with each other easily.
Varanasi is a spiritual city with temples everywhere, and there aren’t too many places for students to hangout.  However, being one of the biggest tourist spots in the country, the chances of interacting with people from all walks of life are quite bright.
Placement Cell
The placement season starts from the last week of July and runs till March. Job offers, dates of interviews, selection of candidates and all placements-related communications are announced through the training & placement office. The placement office is assisted by a committee comprising of students from the under-graduate and post-graduate engineering streams.

The Training & Placement Office, IIT (BHU) Varanasi facilitates the process of placement of students passing out from the Institute besides collaborating with leading organizations and institutes in setting up of internship and training program of students.The office liaises with various industrial establishments, corporate houses etc which conduct campus interviews and select graduate and post-graduate students from all disciplines. The Training & Placement Office provides the infra-structural facilities to conduct group discussions, tests and interviews besides catering to other logistics. The Office interacts with many industries in the country, of which nearly 200 companies visit the campus for holding campus interviews. The Placement Office is assisted by a committee comprising representatives of students from the under-graduate and post-graduate engineering streams. The committee evolves a broad policy framework every year besides a set of rules which are inviolable. Students members are closely co-opted in implementing these policy decisions.
