Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru

The brain child of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, a successful businessman and philanthropist, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was conceived in the late 1800s. To this end, Tata set up a provisional committee under the leadership of Burjorji Padshah, an educationist, to come up with a blueprint for the proposed university. The committee drafted a plan which went through several iterations before it was finalised. Tata also endowed a substantial part of his personal wealth for this ambitious project.Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, was established in 1909. The Institute occupies nearly 400 acres of prime land in Bangalore, generously donated by the Maharaja of Mysore. The institute offers courses at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate levels. The applications are to be filled online. Admissions are based on merit.

Library:
The library of the Indian Institute of Science was established in 1911 and it is one of the first three departments started in the Institute. It is regarded as one of the best scientific and technical libraries in India. Apart from the Main Library it has departmental libraries also. In 1995 the library was renamed as "JRD Tata Memorial Library". The JRD Tata Memorial Library Annex and Digital Library were inaugurated in 1998 by Mr. Ratan Tata. The library currently receives over 1500 periodical titles of which 1210 are subscribed while the remaining titles are received as gratis and on exchange basis. In addition, over 10,000 journals are accessible online due to INDEST subscription. The total holdings of the library exceeds 4, 11,676 documents.
 
Placements
The Indian Institute of Science, the only institution in India to be ranked within the top 20 Universities of the world, confers Master degree in various disciplines of Engineering to about 450 students every year, in addition to the Doctoral degree to around 350 scholars in Science and Engineering Departments. IISc continues to attract the cream of companies in the industry. Some of the companies that have recruited in the past are, Wipro, HCL, Decibel, Roland, Robert, Bosch, Mphasis, TCS.
