BJ Medical College, Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad Medical School was created in 1871 and it became affiliated with the Civil Hospital in the city of Ahmedabad. The School had humble beginnings, starting with 14 students who pursued hospital assistant training. In 1879, Sir Byramjee Jeejeebhoy donated Rs.20.000/- and the school was renamed after him as B. J. Medical School. The school grew and became affiliated with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bombay in 1917. By 1946, the school obtained affiliation with Bombay University and then achieved higher status for itself to become B.J. Medical College, providing diplomas for L.C.P.S.In 1951, The college was affiliated to Gujarat University for its undergraduate courses. The postgraduate courses were affiliated to the Gujarat University in 1956. The Gujarat University took over the school, which today flourishes with other allied medical and paramedical institutions.

Ranking
India Today ranks the institute as the 13th best institute for Medical studies in the country. This is a pretty good rank considering the number of good institutes available for medicine in India. Also, since there are only 250 seats for admission and thousands applying for them, the competition is tough and only the best crack the exam.
Location and Campus
The college is located right in the heart of the city of Ahmedabad, and is in close proximity to the railway station and the airport.

The institute is well equipped with modern facilities.  The campus has a 500 bed hospital with state of the art equipment.  The centrally air conditioned library has a rich collection of books on all subjects, along with books by national and international authors.  The campus has its own residential flats for faculty members and staff.  The residential houses are provided with cable TV, telecom facilities, 24 hour water supply and electricity back up.
