All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, in short AIIMS, is located on the ring road area of Safdarjang in Delhi NCR.  AIIMS conducts programmes in medical and para-medical courses, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and awards its own degrees.  At AIIMS, teaching and research are conducted in approximately 28 courses in Healthcare and Medicine, 5 of which are at the undergraduate level.  Around 72 students are admitted in the MBBS course at AIIMS every year.

The college was established in 1956 as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament in the same year. It is a leading institute in the field of medical research in India, with more than 600 research publications by its faculty and researchers every year. There are twenty-five clinical departments, including four super-specialty centers, which manage practically all types of disease conditions with support from pre- and para-clinical departments.

Admission to the college is through its all India entrance test.  Application forms are available from March to April every year. The exam is conducted in June and the results are declared in mid July. Classes commence post completion of the admission process.

AIIMS has been consistently ranked as the top medical college in India by India Today in annual surveys starting from 1997. AIIMS has held the top slot for the last six years in a row, and has been ranked first for 11 out of the 12 years that India Today has conducted the survey.

Several other surveys conducted by The Week and Outlook magazines have named AIIMS the best hospital in India overall, as well as the best in several individual fields such as Cardiology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Gynaecology and Ophthalmology, ahead of several specialised institutions.

Approximately 80,000 to 1,00,000 students appear for the exam every year to qualify for around 72 seats. The acceptance rate for admission to the undergraduate course is approximately 0.08%.
Hostel and Other Facilities
AIIMS is a residential college where the faculty members, staff and students live on either the main campus or one of the several campuses which form a part of the institution. There are five hostels for male undergraduate students and a single hostel for female undergraduate students. These six hostels together can accommodate around 850 students.  Additional hostels for Nursing students and post-graduate students are also available at a separate facility near the main AIIMS campus.

AIIMS has various other facilities that include a large library, computer labs, an organ retrieval banking organisation, an electron microscope facility, etc. for the promotion of research. It also has a student’s gymkhana, cafes and a swimming pool.
Campus Life
Approximately 80% of the students are male. The hostel life centers around the Quadrangle in the gents' hostel, where most students can be seen relaxing or studying.
The college has a cosmopolitan student body owing to its countrywide reputation. Exchange students from several Indian and international medical schools also add to the cosmopolitan environment. Students are represented by the AIIMS Students' Union, which is headed by an executive committee that is elected every year from students of the 6th semester.

The students involve themselves in extra-academic movements, including Pulse, the annual inter-college festival hosted by AIIMS. It is surely India's largest medical fest, with daily attendance ranging from 5000 to 15000. A well-equipped gym, swimming pool and courts for tennis, basketball, volleyball, squash and soccer provide ample recreational opportunities as well.
Faculty
The faculty at AIIMS is the best in the country. It comprises of some of the best doctors and academicians. All the professors are highly experienced and qualified. Most of the faculty work full time at AIIMS. However, there are many distinguished guest faculties who visit the campuses from time to time. Achievements
AIIMS has been pioneering the Indian Health industry in many ways. Some of its key achievement areas are:
     •    AIIMS is the first Indian center to perform a successful cardiac transplant
     •    AIIMS is a leader in Stem Cell therapy, especially Cardiac and Neurological
     •    AIIMS has India's first and only minimally invasive surgery training centre
     •    The first in-vitro fertilisation facility in the public sector was set up at the AIIMS in February 2008
     •    It is a pioneer of robotic surgeries in India
