Gender parity in education and career opportunities has been a hot topic of discussion for years. However, in the last decade, there has been a noticeable progress with more and more women taking up engineering, especially computer science and technology, as their career path. Among the other developing countries, India is one of the states with relatively lower parity between male and female students and employees in the field of engineering. 

Proving their potential and capabilities, women are conquering this sector as well. It was back in 1919 when India had its first female engineer and there has been no looking back since! 

Here’s a list of 5 successful and powerful women in India who have shattered the glass ceiling, inspiring many young girls to opt for engineering.

Sudha Murthy

Sudha Murthy is one of the most successful and influential engineers India is proud of. A computer science student from Indian Institute of Science, she is a chairperson of the Infosys Foundation and is also a part of public health care initiatives of the Gates Foundation. The Padma Shri-awardee has also written books in English and Kannada.

 

Kriti Sharma

Kriti Sharma from Rajasthan graduated in Advanced Computer Science from the University of St Andrews. She is awarded as the Google India Women in Engineering award for her excellence in computer science by the global tech giant. She was listed in Forbes magazine’s 30 Under 50.

 

Kalpana ChawlaEverybody knows Kalpana Chawla! The Haryana-born astronaut was the first Indian woman to go to space and create history. She was an Aeronautical Engineer from the Punjab Engineering College of Chandigarh.

 

Moumita DuttaThere is many women who run the show at the Indian Space Research Organisation, one of whom is Moumita Dutta. The Indian scientist and Engineer are currently working at the Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad. She started her career as an engineer and has been a part of the Mars Orbiter Mission. She also received the ISRO Team of Excellence Award for the Mangalyaan.

 

Padmashree Warrior

A graduate of chemical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Padmashree is the captain of the ship at NIO US (Chinese automobile manufacturer) as the Chief Executive Officer. She also holds a master’s degree in chemical engineering from Cornell University and is now based in San Jose, California.

While there is a lot to achieve in terms of gender equality across sectors, let’s take a moment to recognise these inspiring women who have changed the game in engineering and computer sciences with their ideas and creativity.
