“It’s not enough to prepare our children for the future, we must prepare the future for our children,” says Jill Buck, founder of the Go Green Initiative, which helps schools in the USA create a campus-wide culture of conservation. The western world is bracing up for many eco-friendly initiatives to make the planet a better place to live. While Indian schools are contributing their share to sustainable development, on this World Environment Day, let’s look beyond tree plantation and play a larger role in the conservation of the environment.
Green Schools
A Green School would walk the extra mile to marry sustainability with education, by making optimum utilization of resources. The Green Schools Programme (GSP), an initiative by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), advocates the idea of creating environment-friendly school spaces and promotes the inculcation of sustainable values in students.
- To illustrate, GSP Award winner Delhi Public School (DPS), Patna, uses an elaborate rainwater harvesting structure.
- Another winner, The Fabindia School, Pali, Rajasthan installed 10kW of solar power that caters to 90 percent of the school’s energy needs.

Green Design
Your school’s design can control absenteeism and promote an environment for learning too. Since your teachers and students spend a lot of time indoors, good ventilation and air quality can prevent respiratory illnesses and keep your students alert and open to learning.
- Aman Setu School, Pune is constructed from recycled materials and is devoid of toxic paints and substances.
Green Clubs
Green Clubs help students put their Geography lessons and Environmental Science learnings to practice. By networking with clubs from different schools, students learn and have fun through discussions, debates, and on-ground activities, thus facilitating the cultivation of a sustainable mindset and lifestyle in students.
- The Ozone club of the Great International School, Madhya Pradesh sensitizes participants to the need for conservation and a pollution-free environment. They launched by planting 1100 saplings.
- The Eco club at Hisar’s St Kabir School has gained mileage by including localities in community development activities.
Green Scholarships
Green Scholarships can act as a great incentive to foster sustainable habits like planting trees, using public transport and performing eco-club activities. The more service a student offers to the environment, the more green miles they accumulate and this boosts their overall academic performance. It can be a great way for passionate students to pay for school.
Schools have always been on the forefront of planting trees and safeguarding the environment from all the malice. The aforesaid initiatives will help them push the envelope to create sustainable living spaces.
