The Helen Macmillan Brown Bursaries were established in 1920 by Emeritus Professor John Macmillan Brown, in memory of his wife, the late Helen Macmillan Brown. Up to three scholarships are offered per year, at least one must be offered to a woman.

Scholarship Details

The scholarship is applicable to students from all international countries for studies at University of Canterbury in New Zealand. It awards an amount of up to NZ $2500 per annum and is applicable to all undergraduate students.


Eligibility Criteria

  • The students applying for a bursary must have achieved a university entrance qualification
  • Every scholarship recipient shall reside, throughout the tenure of the award, at University Hall administered by the University, and shall pursue a course of study approved by the Academic Board.


Application Process

  • Students should check carefully that they are eligible to apply, including that their intended degree qualifies
  • International students may apply unless the regulations specifically restrict the scholarship to NZ citizens or permanent residents
  • Students should commence university/country entry and admission procedures and arrange any academic or language tests required
  • Students should ensure that all the information requested is provided by the closing date. They should supply a birth certificate, school results, financial information and/or references
