Admission Criteria & Eligibility

GCSE/IGCSE/GCE/AICE English courses

Our English facility requirement can be satisfied by any of the following:

  • A minimum final grade of "B" ("6" in reformed qualifications) in GCSE/IGCSE/GCE Ordinary Level English, English Language, or English as a Second Language, OR
  • A minimum final or predicted grade of "C" in GCE A Level/AS Level/AICE/CAPE English or English Language
  • Sending us your results: Final results should be sent to us directly by the appropriate examination authority. Predicted results should be sent by your school.

International Baccalaureate English

  • The minimum requirement is a score of at least 4 (predicted or final) in Higher or Standard Level English A: Literature or English A: Language and Literature. HL English B is not acceptable.
  • Sending us your results: Final results should be sent to us directly by the International Baccalaureate Organization. You can make your request online at International Baccalaureate Office: www.ibo.org
  • Predicted results should be sent by your school.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Module

  • The minimum requirement is an overall band of 6.5, with no band below 6.0.

  • Sending us your results:  Results must be sent to us electronically. You should select University of Toronto (Undergraduate and Graduate programs) from the list of options.   The University of Toronto (Undergraduate and Graduate Programs) is an IELTS "STED RO".  This means that we subscribe to the electronic score-sending service and do not accept paper results.   You may wish to advise your test centre, specifically, that U of T is an STED RO when you make your request to have your scores sent to us.   You do not need to notify U of T once you have ordered your test results. U of T receives IELTS results on an ongoing basis. 
The minimum scores required for the different TOEFL tests are:

Internet-based Test:

  • Minimum Requirement: total score of 100 + 22 on Writing
  • Discretionary Range: total score 89-99 +19 - 21 on Writing

Paper-based Test (discontinued in July 2017) :

  • Minimum Requirement: total score of 600 + 5.0 on TWE
  • Discretionary Range: total score 573-597 + 4.5 on TWE
Minimum Admission Requirements: All India Senior School Certificate (awarded by CBSE) or Indian School Certificate (awarded by CISCE).  Year 12 State Board Exams with excellent results will also be considered on an individual basis.
