Maulana Azad Medical College

Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) is located in a very mainstream area of New Delhi on the Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg. It offers around 2 undergraduate courses in medicine. The college had a humble beginning in the Irwin (Lok Nayak) hospital in 1958. Its foundation was laid by Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant in 1959. The college admits 200 students annually. Admission is through entrance tests that vary according to the course being applied to. The college is named after Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, freedom fighter and first education minister of India. It is consistently ranked among the top 5 medical colleges in India.

The college was ranked 4th among medical colleges in India by the India Today magazine in the year 2017 and also Ranked 11th By Outlook For the year 2017. It has moved 3 places down from its previous year’s ranking of 2nd. It was ranked 5th in 2010, 5th in 2009, 5th in 2008, and 7th in 2007 by India Today.
Infrastructure and Hostels
The college campus is large and houses the medical, nursing and dental colleges along with a government and dental hospital, UG and PG hostels, and staff quarters. There is a separate block for each department. Each department has its own air-conditioned lecture theatres and labs. The library has Wi-Fi connectivity. Separate hostels are provided for boys and girls. The college has the following hostels:

Facilities
The college offers sports facilities such as gymnasiums, carom board rooms, basketball courts, volleyball courts, swimming pool, snooker tables, table tennis tables, football ground, cricket ground, and badminton courts. Counselling services are also provided to the students. The college auditorium is equipped with audiovisual facilities and is used to host college functions. The lecture theatres have public address systems with microphones, recording facilities, epidiascopes, overhead projectors, slide projectors and film projectors. Computer and LAN facilities are also provided to students.
Library
The library at Maulana Azad Medical College is one of the finest. It has air-conditioned and spacious reading rooms. It hosts around 32,907 books, 3000 theses, 33,663 volumes of bound journals, 650 CDs and 200 audio-visual cassettes. It is automated with ‘LibSys’ automation software. Students can access electronic resources from online databases from computer terminals provided in the library.
Student Activities
The college has made it mandatory for students to attend all the college functions including Sports Day, College Annual Day and Union Day. The Annual Day is generally celebrated in March/April. The college also provides certificate courses in Yoga. Students can also participate in clubs such as the Cine Club and associations such as MAMCOS (Maulana Azad Medical College Old Students’ Association).
