Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research

The Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (IPGMER) is located on J.C Bose Road, Kolkata, in the state of West Bengal. The institute offers around three undergraduate courses. It was started as a hospital in 1957 and was converted into a medical training institute in 2004. It was earlier affiliated to University of Calcutta. In 2004, it became affiliated to West Bengal University of Health Sciences. Admission into the institute is on the basis of AIPMT/NEET UG Test. The test is conducted in May and results are declared in June. Classes begin in August.

Library

IPGME&R Central Library is intended for use by the students, researchers and faculty of the institute as well as medical staff of SSKM Hospital. The total number of books in its collection currently stands at approximately 20,600+. It also has a collection of 29,000+ bound volumes of Biomedical Journals and approximately in 2,250 disciplines. The broadband internet facility caters to the needs of faculty, students and research scholars. The institute also has access to 290+ eJournals subscribed by the National Medical Library, New Delhi (NLM). These are made available through its ERMED consortium. The access is available from computers in the library and elsewhere those are linked to the Institution server. However, availability of this particular facility is subject to subscription status at NLM.


Campus
The institute is located on a 34 acre campus. On its north is the longest flyover of Kolkata. It overlooks the Victoria Memorial. From the institute, one can view the horse racing ground of the Royal Calcutta Turf Club and the Vidyasagar Setu – a steel roped bridge. The institute campus has large areas of greenery with tall trees and flower beds. While the on the one side of the campus are the hospital buildings, the other side has academic blocks for undergraduate, postgraduate and paramedical courses.
