Bethune College

The Bethune College was established in 1879 and is the first women’s college in India.  It is located in the heart of north Kolkata and is affiliated to University of Kolkata. The college offers a total of around 21 courses in Business Management, Science and Humanities out of which 17 courses are offered at the undergraduate level.

Selection to the college is on the basis of the marks secured in 10+2 of any recognised board. Students can start applying to the college in June. The classes commence from July onwards.

Campus

Location and Campus
The college is situated opposite Hedua (now known as Azad Hind Bagh) and the Scottish Church College and is accessible by many bus and tram routes. One can also reach the college using underground railway. The college is at a five minutes walking distance from Girish Park Metro Rail Station.

The entire campus is a group of old heritage buildings. The principal’s office building is the oldest heritage building of Bethune College. The college office has been located here for the last 127 years. The first floor which used to be the principal’s quarters earlier is now the Science library while the principal's chamber and the college office is on the ground floor.
Library
The library has developed together with the college as an indispensable part of the entire college. Two separate department libraries have been put in place for the ease of the students. The Science library is huge and has an independent section comprising of the lending section, processing section, journal section, reference section, etc. The Arts library is built on an area of 4000 sq. ft. and comprises of a reading room with book stacks containing course books, reference books, rare books and old journals.
Other Facilities
All the honours departments are equipped with computers for use as teaching aids and for maintenance of departmental records. These computers are linked to the libraries. This enables the staff to search and know the status and availability of books quickly. All departments are linked to each other through LAN. Internet facility is available to all the faculty members. Students are also allowed to use the internet in the college libraries.
Placement
The career-counselling cell at Bethune conducts interactive seminars and organises presentations by external agencies to guide students regarding prospective jobs. The convener and members of the placement committee connect regularly with corporate business houses. The companies are also invited frequently to give guidelines to students regarding employment opportunities. TCS and Satyam are two companies which often visit the campus for placement. Bethune College helps its students to step up steadily in their future career and life as well. In this regard, a team of Career Counselling Cell is proactive enough to explore diverse fields of employment for graduate and post graduate students through meets with various companies and placing them according to their interests.The Career Counselling Cell conducts support programmes that enhance their chances to select future course of study as well as placement. The Cell holds regular workshops for the final year students to zero in on their skills and aptitudes, strengths and weaknesses network with the industry leaders/institutes of higher studies to provide them with the opportunity to find a suitable placement/future career.The Cell has been successful in bringing the best of companies, like WIPRO, TCS, GENPACT etc., to name a few, to the campus head hunting so far and is working relentlessly to enhance connections with various other renowned organisations/industry leaders/institutes so that it can provide the best of the opportunities to its students for their future.
