Annamalai University

In the early 1920s, to serve the downtrodden and to promote Tamil Literature, Rajah Sir S. R. M. Annamalai Chettiar founded Sri Minakshi College, Sri Minakshi Tamil College and Sri Minakshi Sanskrit College in a rural setup at Chidambaram. In 1928, Rajah Sir S. R. M. Annamalai Chettiar agreed with the local Government to handover the above said institution for establishing a University. Thus, on 01.01.1929 Annamalai University was established as per Annamalai University Act 1928 (Tamil Nadu Act 1 of 1929).

Annamalai University Act 2013
The most significant development is the enactment of the Annamalai University Act, 2013 (Tamil Nadu Act 20 of 2013), which has come into force from September 25, 2013, after obtaining the assent of His Excellency, the President of India.

During the last eighty two years, the university has grown rapidly and has consolidated its position as a top class residential university. In fact, Annamalai Nagar is already a busy and full-fledged university town, east of Chidambaram, the abode of Lord Nataraja. The university campus, including the colleges, hostels, and playgrounds, occupies an area of about a thousand acres. This autonomous residential university has two centres for advanced study, one in marine biology and the other three in linguistics.

In 2006, Annamalai University opened its first study center in Toronto, Canada, offering programmes in Music, Dance, Tamil and Yoga. Other overseas centres include the Al Mihad Institute, Dubai and the Al Hilal Education Centre, Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates as well as the Al Noor Education Centre in Muscat, Oman.
 
Facilities
Annamalai University provides various facilities like hostels for both boys and girls, main and central library, explicit Yoga center, sports complex and auditorium, staff recreation club and co-operative stores. There are also other facilities like hospitals, guest house and captive power generation for the ease of the students.Students can also enrol in services like National Cadet Corps, Student Cultural Club, Heart Foundation, Youth Red Cross, Social Service League, blood donor clinic, chest pain camps as well as in rural development services.
 
Placements
The placement cells at the university function from three different locations. The first one caters to the needs of the students in the faculty of Engineering & Technology, the second helps the faculty of Agriculture and the third is associated with the department of Business Administration for the students of Arts, Science, Education, Fine Arts and Marine Science. These cells advise students with regard to the choice of careers and higher studies. They help students to undergo in-plant training during semester holidays and also find suitable placements through campus interviews. They also conduct seminars and training courses periodically on entrepreneurial development and career guidance programmes.
