Boys don\u2019t cry\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStop behaving like a girl\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou don\u2019t have to cry and be sad for everything\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning in school has been a bittersweet experience for most students in India. When it comes to Emotional Learning, it is a whole different story, especially when emotions are involved.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.univariety.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/download-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9847 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.univariety.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/download-2-300x95.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"95\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concept of Emotional Learning in school has been dormant in the education system, especially in India.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The portrayal of emotions in class has been often looked down upon.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain personal stigmas are repeatedly mentioned to students and teachers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding what students go through is at the backseat (literally).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nStudents are expected to be \u2018happy\u2019 at all times, and not have problems, emotionally at least.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because, \u201cWhat will my friends think?\u201d or \u201cWhat will my teacher think?\u201d or even \u201cI am going to get scolded again, so why bother?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To remove these stigmas, and promote the importance of emotional learning, Social-Emotional Learning or SEL is what is needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Social-Emotional Learning?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social-Emotional Learning is a concept that refers to how students:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regulate their emotions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communicate with each other<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understand compassion and empathy to understand the needs of other people<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build relationships<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make good decision<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nSocial-Emotional Learning is NOT new. It has been talked about since the times of Plato. However, its awareness increased in the 1990s when the Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) was founded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.univariety.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Girl-Student-Education-School-Girl-Student-998988.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9848 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.univariety.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Girl-Student-Education-School-Girl-Student-998988-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CASEL was founded as a collaborative effort to bring together educators, psychologists, child well-being advocates, and researchers. CASEL\u2019s advocates spreading the concept and the knowledge of Social-Emotional Learning. And more importantly, implement it in the school curriculum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Collaborative, there are 5 primary components of Social-Emotional Learning<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-Awareness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Awareness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-Management<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responsible Decision-Making<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relationship Skills<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<strong>How do these core components help?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to various curriculum developers, these components help to develop brain functions in the child that instill healthy emotions.
