It\u2019s about finding solutions to problems that will take us closer to the true essence of teaching and learning. On that note, it\u2019s time to make way for <strong>Design Thinking<\/strong>, because this is one such approach that does this by putting the needs of the students first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Design thinking opens up the pathway for effective and creative problem-solving, where the right mindset can solve even long-enduring challenges. On one hand, teachers who<\/span> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.univariety.com\/blog\/5-dilemmas-students-face-and-how-a-teacher-can-resolve-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">look at a problem<\/a> <\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with this approach become more attentive to the intrinsic needs of students. On the other hand, students who imbibe the practicality of the design approach are more attuned to creative problem-solving.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>The Cycle of Design Thinking<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2824 size-full\" title=\"student career focus\" src=\"http:\/\/www.univariety.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/d2.png\" alt=\" http:\/\/blogs.infor.com\" width=\"624\" height=\"278\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2825 size-medium\" title=\"Ekya School bangalore\" src=\"http:\/\/www.univariety.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/d3-1-300x225.png\" alt=\"https:\/\/mindspacearchitects.wordpress.com\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Bangalore\u2019s <strong>Ekya School<\/strong> has been one of the leading Indian schools where students use design thinking to apply science concepts and skills to solve problems. They engage with target segments of people they probably never interacted much with, try to immerse themselves in their point of view, and come up with different solutions. Here\u2019s its Grade 4 students tried to address Bangalore\u2019s garbage crisis:<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">1. Empathize<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">In order to understand the severity of the problem, all the fourth graders undertook the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Understanding their immediate environment: <\/strong>By meeting and observing workers who segregated the waste on the street, the<\/span> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.univariety.com\/blog\/easiest-way-to-stop-students-from-making-career-mistakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">school\u2019s support staff<\/a><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and their own family members at home, the students could understand the complexities involved.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Interacting with the Asst. Commissioner<\/strong>: This was carried out to help students know more about the BBMP municipality and the practices being adopted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Undertaking <strong>secondary research<\/strong> through newspaper articles<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 24px; color: #000000;\">2. Define<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2826\" style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\" title=\"Ekya School's students\" src=\"http:\/\/www.univariety.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/d4.png\" alt=\"http:\/\/www.ekyaschools.com\/\" width=\"400\" height=\"619\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The students created empathy maps for the users based on the observations gathered in the \u2018empathise\u2019 stage. Based on this understanding, two important points were identified:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">People were facing a lack of dedicated waste disposal space.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Waste segregation is not being implemented at the source due to the lack of patience, odour arising out of waste or not liking the process of waste disposal.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 24px;\">3. Ideate<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Students interacted over multiple rounds to understand the problem better and came up with a number of ideas ranging from bots-operated dustbins to discharging waste to outer space. Specific users and possible solutions to their<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.univariety.com\/app\/guidance-solutions\/personalized-counseling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unique problems<\/a> <\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">were discussed and submitted for feedback.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 24px;\">4. Prototype<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Once the ideas were discussed and possible blueprints finalized, the teams began building prototypes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">By adopting a democratic approach, the internal team managed issues over material handling, allocation of responsibilities, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 24px;\">5. Test<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Once the prototypes were ready, the students made those available for user testing by teachers and other teams. A discussion was undertaken about possible modifications that they would like to make to their projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Have you implemented such novel problem-solving techniques in your classroom?
