When one thinks of the contributions of an alumnus who has impacted society and alma mater, few names spring easily to mind than Ratan Tata. In this lifetime journey as a visionary leader, philanthropist, and industrialist, Tata’s journey is a testimony to how engaged alumni can have a remarkable impact. These significant donations through mammoth amounts, mentorship, and inspirational support are tests to demonstrate that, by all means, alumni can make a difference, such impact remaining inside educational institutions and going outside, too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ratan Tata’s academic studies date back as far as 1955 at Cornell University. He was admitted to pursue mechanical engineering, but soon developed an interest in architecture. This turn of events influenced his perspective on life as well as his future engagements. Even many years after graduating from the institute, Tata did not forget Cornell; this becomes a significant testimony to the bonding nature of alumni associations and interaction with an alumnus or an alumnus community.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2013, Tata was conferred the “Cornell Entrepreneur of the Year<\/strong>” award, which he calls an honor in that it marked his excellent achievement and a sustained lifetime relationship with the university. His crowning contribution, however, came from a $50 million gift<\/strong> to Cornell. The impressive gift was among the largest ever made to the institution. It went into funding scholarships for Indian students and supporting research aimed at reducing rural poverty and malnutrition.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s not a philanthropic story; it is the way by which the alumnus is enabled to be pumping in innovation and opportunity long after they have left the classroom. Tata Hall provides a significant home for memorial lectures and events, but it also represents Tata’s commitment to leadership, education, and especially nurturing tomorrow’s business leaders. In the wake of Ratan Tata, Tata Hall served as a point of convergence and focus of memorial services to underscore the personal and institutional relationship both with him and with Harvard. This can aid in demonstrating how lasting the influence alumni are in life and death, given symbolic and financial gestures.<\/span><\/p>\n

While it caused ripples at the world’s top institutions, it also had a huge impact on Indian education and research. Very few people realize that Tata’s leadership role was not only with the Tata Group as Chairman. \"RatanPart of Tata’s social investment has gone into donating \u20b975 crores<\/strong> to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) for Alzheimer’s research. His other donation to IIT Bombay amounts to \u20b995 crores<\/strong> which established the Tata Center for Technology and Design (TCTD), a hub dedicated to developing solutions for India’s abject and nascent challenges in healthcare, energy, and sustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n

Later, during my time with EY in Mumbai, I met him on two more occasions at the Bombay House.”\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
