University of Calcutta

The University of Calcutta was established in 1854. It offers courses at the undergraduate postgraduate and doctorate levels.  The University adopted in the first instance, the pattern of the University of London and gradually introduced modifications in its constitution. Admissions are granted on the basis of merit. There is no separate test that the candidates have to take for admission into the college, only an application has to be filled out which is available at the college campus itself. The university is ranked 20th in India, for courses in law.

Facilities
Library: The library at the University of Calcutta was established in 1857. The library did not have a separate building initially, although it has one now. The university library was originally meant for the use of resident fellows only, although permissions have been granted from time to time to bonafide research workers to use the library. Later on, rules governing the use of the library were revised and included resident registered graduates and university teachers and scholars as well.

NSS: The NSS Cell of the University is functioning since introduction of the NSS by the Govt. of India in the University in 1969. It now has 126 units performing from campus to community for social work like health check-ups, tree plantations, AIDS prevention, campus cleaning, slum/village cleaning along with surveys of the underdeveloped people, campaigns against early marriage, rural development, developing the sports facilities and physical conditions of the slums and underprivileged persons, etc.

Games and Sports:
Presently, Sports have become highly competitive in nature. Every University trying to put their best performance at the time of Inter-University Competition by means of systematic objective and scientific procedure which involve trained coaches, long term coaching programme etc. The Department of Sports, University of Calcutta is a big name in the State as well as in the Country so far as University Games and Sports are concerned.
University Halls and Hostel:
There are 17 Halls and Hostels under the University of Calcutta providing accommodation to about 2000 students studying in the University Colleges of Arts, Commerce, Science, Technology and Law and also the undergraduate students of the colleges as well as men research scholars/fellows of the University. Management of Halls / Hostels is executed by Board of Residence, an advisory body of the University of Calcutta.
The Carmichael Hall is reserved for Muslim students only (both undergraduate and postgraduate students). The Under-graduate Halls namely (1) Vidyasagar Chhatriniwas is attached to the Viharilal Home Science Campus and (2) U.G. Lady Students’ Hall is open to lady students of any University of Calcutta-affiliated college in the city of Kolkata which has no hostel of its own. Only paid research scholars of the University conducting male research work leading to a doctoral degree are eligible for Research Scholars’ Hostel.
